Global News Relay 2016 to focus on sports

Planning for Global News Relay 2016 is in full swing with the online broadcast scheduled for 5 p.m. GMT March 18.

More than a dozen universities from around the world have signed up to participate in the third Global News Relay, and additional universities are still being sought. GNR, as it is called, began in 2014 at the University of Salford in Manchester, England.

The theme for this year’s newscast is Sports in Our Communities with stories being produced by journalism students from universities in England, India, Australia, Bulgaria, the United States and more.

This year’s newscast is being coordinated by Professor Faith Sidlow and her students at California State University-Fresno.

Watch the first Global News Relay

Global News Relay, the journalism collaboration project involving university students from around the world, began in 2014 under the direction of Prof. Sarah Jones at the University of Salford. The students produced 12 hours of content, and originally shared the newscast online March 27, 2014.

The YouTube channel contains two short Global News Relay promos and  newscasts from each school, which make up the 12-hour broadcast.
